Under - solo violin and septet

duration 15’

This work examines the concepts of foreground and background, creating a musical contrast in composition in which the solo violin and the ensemble possess different structures in the score and share different qualities of time progression. The piece shows the process of the solo violin's individuality gradually blending with the ensemble over time and eventually disappearing. In the final section, the distinction between foreground and background disappears, and all instruments play equal roles. The theme of this work is inspired by the weather of Iceland and Dostoevsky's novels, particularly "Notes from Underground" and "Crime and Punishment," which explore the inner conflicts of individuals and their relationships with others.

This piece is dedicated to Stijn Brinkman
